Wordmark

Overview

Consistency is essential to a strong and unified brand. However, consistency, for us, does not mean conformity or sameness. On the contrary, Boundless is about amplifying and celebrating the distinct characteristics of our campuses, colleges, faculties and departments, and demonstrating how they help define and strengthen the University’s overall reputation and personality.

To help create greater consistency and cohesion, we have developed an official Boundless wordmark. This wordmark is a standardized and distinctive typographic treatment that establishes a clear and memorable visual identity for the University. This section provides technical guidelines for various uses of the wordmark, including tracking, colour, suitable backgrounds, size, clear space and placement.

The Boundless wordmark is set as all caps in Trade Gothic Bold, one of the University’s primary typefaces. The word Boundless is tracked quite tightly, to approximately −50. Whenever possible, the colour of the Boundless wordmark should be Pantone® 655.

Accordion ToggleSizing and Clear Space

To maintain the integrity of the Boundless wordmark, observe the following guidelines on size and clear space. The size of the Boundless wordmark will vary with each use. The Boundless wordmark’s width should not be more than 2.5 times the U of T signature’s width when the two elements appear together. This ensures the Boundless wordmark does not overwhelm the presence and visibility of the University signature. The minimum width of the wordmark is 0.5 inch for print publications and 150 pixels for digital publications.

Co-Branding

Divisional and departmental branding requires the use of the Boundless wordmark. External communications may not require the use of the Boundless wordmark.

When co-branding with other institutions, the Boundless wordmark is not used, and the U of T signature should occupy as much of the visual real estate as each of the other brands.

Accordion TogglePlacing the U of T Signature

The most important rule for positioning the U of T signature and the Boundless wordmark in the same layout is that they should appear on opposite sides. Whenever possible, place the U of T signature in the corner diagonally opposite the Boundless wordmark. If this is not possible, the U of T signature may be placed in the corner immediately across from the wordmark. The width of the Boundless wordmark may not be more than 2.5 times the width of the U of T signature. Refer to the Sizing and Clear Space section for more information on the relationship between the sizes of the signature and the wordmark. If the U of T signature and the Boundless wordmark must appear adjacent to one another (e.g., within a document footer), the Boundless wordmark may be placed in a horizontal orientation.

The U of T signature should appear in the lower left corner, with the Boundless wordmark in the lower right. Refer to the Sizing and Clear Space section for rules about the size and clear space for the signature and wordmark when used in this format. These rules apply to all U of T, UTM, UTSC, faculty and divisional logos.

Accordion ToggleWordmark Placement

The baseline of the Boundless wordmark should be placed against the right or bottom edge of the layout. Where full-bleed printing is available, or in digital applications, the wordmark should always contact at least two adjacent edges of the layout.

Important: place the Boundless wordmark at the edge of the layout only if you have direct control of printing, trimming and assembly. Be aware that the wordmark can easily shift or be partially cut off during production when placed at the edge.

Where full-bleed printing is not available, the wordmark should be placed in the lower or upper right corner and against the safety boundaries of the layout.

Whenever possible, the Boundless wordmark should not appear on the left page of a two-page spread, as it will be lost in the gutter. When buying magazine print advertising, please ensure right-side placement.

Ensure that the background behind the wordmark does not lessen its legibility.
